The novel simultaneously tells tales of reverse discrimination, of the treacheries imbedded in diet/anti-depressant pharmaceuticals, of the financial intricacies of the new age of medicine, and of even the psycho-social legacies of Southern miscegenation. Grounded in and around the environs of the fictional Montclair, Mississippi, "House Call" presents a clever, smart depiction of modern life against the looming specter of a series of murders. People seem to be dropping like flies around Dr. Diana Bratton, and she is convinced that there is more to the story than just coincidence. Her search to find out who or what is causing the deaths leads her in a direction she is hesitant to take. The story jumps back and forth from the University campus in the 1960s to present day Jackson, Mississippi, which helps create depth, intrigue, and also muddies the water so that you are left suspecting everyone. August 18, 2018, marked the fourth annual Mississippi Book Festival, an expanding and highly energetic literary lawn party gracing the beautiful, oak – draped grounds and surrounding buildings of the historic Mississippi State Capitol in downtown Jackson. Narrator and protagonist Hash reveals his own coming of age story in which his high school in Frick Village seems obsessed with garbage collection. Hash's personal involvement in the student program, Operation Pick-up Kids, shows his attempt to complete the void in his life through other people's garbage.
