I am happy to share reader and fellow author Michael Hartnett's review of the audiobook version of my latest thriller, "The 5 Manners of Death," narrarted by Steven Jay Cohen:
A Terrific Listen to a Memorable Mystery
"Boy, does Darden North have a way with the scene, whether in a drawing room, classroom, or operating room. Since the bodies keep dropping around our heroine, the surgeon Diana, in "The 5 Manners of Death," those scenes are physically and psychologically memorable. What a lively and satisfying listen. This foray is my first with an audio book. With a breathless intensity that captures the novel’s Southern flavor, narrator Steven Jay Cohen does justice to the fine writing, deftly capturing the eloquence, the snappy dialogue, and the building suspense. As the title suggests, the victims are delivered in many forms of termination--all punctuated by those intermingled human dramas of stress, suspicion, and blame. All of t…

August 18, 2018, marked the fourth annual Mississippi Book Festival, an expanding and highly energetic literary lawn party gracing the beautiful, oak – draped grounds and surrounding buildings of the historic Mississippi State Capitol in downtown Jackson. The first two years of the festival, I worked as a volunteer in the Author Panelist room, having the opportunity to meet the visiting authors as well as local writers scheduled to present. In 2017 and again this year, I joined other writers outside in the Authors Alley tent on Mississippi Street, bordering the south lawn of the Capitol. This was an amazing opportunity to visit with many of my readers and to meet many new ones. Lots of signed books were discussed and placed in the hands of readers that Saturday in Authors Alley. Mid-August weather in Mississippi with its 90+ degree humidity will never dampen literary spirits, and fortunately we escaped the forecasted downpour! Thank you to Holly Lange and the other organizers and supp…

I was honored to present as a writer at the 29th annual Natchez Literary and Cinema Celebration, exploring the topic “Southern Gothic.” This time-honored tradition has a reputation as one of the South's most significant conferences devoted to literature, history, film, and culture. The event was held at the Natchez (MS) Convention Center February 22-24, 2018, and I spoke Saturday, February 24 at 3:30 pm. Most of the program was free-of-charge, and there were book signings.
How do medical thrillers and mysteries fit into the Southern Gothic literary genre? If you caught my presentation at the Natchez Literary and Cinema Celebration, then you know the truth. I would also like to share that my fifth novel, “The 5 Manners of Death,” was nominated for the 2018 Fiction award by the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters.
